Elon Musk Suggests Dollar May Be Obsolete on Mars, Citing Mass and Energy as Future Currency

In a cryptic exchange on X, Elon Musk responded to speculation about building cities on the Moon and Mars by suggesting that the U.S. dollar may not be the currency of the future in space. Instead, Musk proposed ‘mass and energy’ as foundational units of value in off-world economies. The comment, directed at users including Senator Elizabeth Warren, underscores Musk’s long-term vision of a multiplanetary civilization where traditional fiat currency becomes irrelevant.

Musk’s statement is consistent with his prior musings on resource-based economies, particularly in contexts where everything must be transported at enormous cost from Earth. By framing economic value in terms of physical mass and energy, he hints at a shift toward a commodity-based system, which could serve as the foundation for future Martian and lunar colonies. The tweet also reinforces his commitment to SpaceX’s Starship program, which is designed to enable such large-scale interplanetary logistics.

While highly speculative, Musk’s comments have sparked discussion among crypto enthusiasts and space economists. The idea of ‘mass and energy’ as currency aligns with certain decentralized and energy-backed token concepts, though no direct link to Dogecoin or other cryptocurrencies was made. The broader implication is that Musk’s vision extends beyond technological hurdles to include rethinking fundamental economic principles for space colonization.
